Requests for time off should be arranged with and approved by your supervisor. Specific requirements for these requests will vary by department and division. Check with your supervisor for details. Any absence without approved leave or absence without reporting to or calling your supervisor may be cause for dismissal.

Bereavement Leave

You are entitled to three days of paid bereavement leave if a member of your immediate family dies. An "immediate family member" for this purpose is your spouse, parent, step-parent, parent-in-law, child, stepchild, brother or sister, grandparent, grandchild, or legal guardian. With the City Manager's approval you may also use up to five additional days of sick leave for bereavement purposes.

FMLA/CFRA

Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and California Family Rights Act (CFRA) are federal and state leave laws that allow an employee to take up to 12 work weeks of unpaid leave from his or her job in a 12 month period to care for themselves or family members who are ill.

An employee, requesting leave due to a non-work-related medical condition may be granted a leave of absence upon submitting a formal request. Such request shall include a written certification from the attending physician that the employee or family member is unable to work or care for themselves due to the medical condition.

If you are on medical leave and are not receiving City-sponsored disability benefits, you may use sick leave and/or unpaid leave. Vacation may be used once your sick leave balance has been exhausted. For more information regarding FMLA, CFRA or how you may be eligible for long term disability benefits contact Human Resources.

During a medical leave, the City's insurance premium contribution continues until the first of the month following 90 days after the unpaid leave starts. Thereafter, all insurance premiums are your responsibility while you are on unpaid leave.

Insurance While on Leave of Absence

If you take an unpaid leave of absence from the City, you may remain on City medical and dental insurance programs at your own expense. The City's contribution to those insurance premiums is suspended until you return from unpaid leave.

However, if the leave of absence is for medical purposes, the City's contribution continues in the regular amount until the first of the month following 90 calendar days after the unpaid leave starts. Following this 90-day period, all insurance premiums are the responsibility of the employee while on unpaid leave.
